New Energy Transport’s plan to build Australia’s largest heavy electric trucking depot has been selected by the Australian Government as one of just four inaugural projects in its new Investor Front Door program.
The announcement, made today by Treasurer Dr Jim Chalmers MP, recognises the New Energy Transport project as one of national significance with the potential to transform Australia’s heavy road freight sector. The selection reinforces the strategic importance and economic potential of electrifying Australia’s road freight infrastructure.
New Energy Transport is building a vertically integrated trucking platform that combines low-cost renewable energy, high-speed charging and electric trucks to deliver zero-emission, all-electric heavy road freight. This includes advancing plans to construct Australia’s largest heavy electric trucking depot near Wilton, south-west of Sydney.
“Being selected for the Investor Front Door program is a significant recognition of what we’re building at New Energy Transport. This announcement confirms that electrifying Australia’s road freight infrastructure is a national economic and security priority,” said New Energy Transport Co-CEO Daniel Bleakley.
“Electric trucks offer a pathway to decouple Australia’s freight system from volatile global energy markets, dramatically improving supply chain resilience and national energy security. We’re proud to be leading the charge to all-electric road freight in Australia,” said Mr Bleakley.
The Wilton site will be the first in a network of strategically located charging depots along the Australian eastern seaboard, enabling interstate zero-emission, all-electric freight services. The depot will be designed to support up to 50 heavy electric trucks and will anchor electrified freight corridors between Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle and Canberra, with operations expected to commence in late 2026. By 2031, New Energy Transport will expand services to routes between Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and Brisbane.
The Investor Front Door program aims to make Australia more attractive to investors by simplifying the development of major, transformational projects. It will provide New Energy Transport with coordinated Australian Government support to navigate regulatory and approval pathways, as well as assistance with government financing opportunities.
The announcement follows a series of significant milestones for New Energy Transport, including completing Australia’s longest single-charge electric truck delivery – a 480 kilometre round trip between Sydney and the Hunter region – and Australia’s first end-to-end all-electric freight delivery between Sydney and Canberra, completed in partnership with ANC and Who Gives A Crap.
“Our commercial deliveries have proven that electric road freight is not only technologically possible in Australia – it’s commercially viable and delivers real economic and productivity gains for our customers,” said New Energy Transport Co-CEO Fredrik Pehrsson.
“The Windrose all-electric prime mover used in the Sydney to Canberra run achieved an 84 per cent reduction in energy costs compared to diesel, and also completed the journey 25 minutes faster than a diesel truck on the same route. These results show the immediate economic and productivity benefits available to major transport buyers that transition to all-electric road freight in Australia,” said Mr Pehrsson.
Recognition under the Investor Front Door program also comes as Australia continues to face diesel and fuel supply pressures that are threatening critical supply chains and increasing the cost of everyday essentials.
